Terrell Municipal Airport will host the Mark Hardin Memorial Air Race on Saturday, May 28. There is no charge for visitors to watch the race, which begins at 11 a.m. and lasts throughout the day. Spectators and racers can also enjoy gourmet Cajun and American fare from Rockn’ Ricks food truck from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
This is the sixth year the Sport Air Racing League sanctioned event has been held in Terrell. In 2015 the event was renamed the Mark Hardin Memorial Air Race to honor the late Mark Hardin. The event always attracts a large contingent of Ercoupe planes, Mr. Hardin’s preferred aircraft. A special namesake trophy will go to the pilot who best displays the spirit he embodied: a sense of fair play, true camaraderie and a love of aviation.
All makes and models of aircraft can participate in the race, which covers a 130 nautical mile course. The $40 registration fee includes an event t-shirt, decals and goody bags, as well as a Friday night reception for pilots at The Bird Nest Bed and Breakfast in Terrell. For information on racing or to register, pilots may visit www.sportairrace.org or contact Patricia Purcell, 903-564-9410.
